November 2021 Good Works Project
On Saturday November 20, a group of Eastern NC CPCU members met at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC. Our duties for the morning included inspecting, sorting, and packing salvage items donated from local grocery stores. Our group, along with other volunteers at the food bank, handled 13,183 pounds of food. This translates to 10,985 meals for families in need! We had a great time together, while helping others!
CPCU Social at Drive Shack
Our group recently hosted a social at the Drive Shack in Raleigh, NC. Invited were new designees and students from the Risk Management and Insurance Program at East Carolina University. We had an excellent time socializing with current and upcoming insurance professionals while working on our golf swings! If you are interested in becoming more active in the chapter, please reach out to any of our chapter leadership!
Good Works March 2021

On Saturday (March 6, 2021), our chapter sent 8 volunteers to the Eastern and Central North Carolina Food Bank to assist with hunger relief, as a result of the on-going Covid pandemic. Collectively, as part of the shift in which we participated, we sorted and bagged 17,577 pounds of sweet and white potatoes that will be shipped to different distribution centers (within 34 different counties) for families in need of food relief. We are honored to have been able to take part in this on-going effort!

The Green Chair Project - Good Works Update
Fall 2015
The Green Chair Project
On Saturday, November 23rd our chapter sent 6 volunteers to assist The Green Chair Project with their quarterly Grateful Living Porch Sale. Everyone had a rewarding experience in helping with duties including the staging of furniture (for sale to the general public, open only on a quarterly basis), receiving incoming donations while performing repairs and reconditioning of furniture.
As a general mission overview, The Green Chair Project provides home furnishings donated from our community for families and individuals who have transitioned from experiencing homelessness or disasters and have secured sustainable housing. The reusable gifts are then cleaned and repaired by volunteers and presented in a way that promotes both dignity and respect.
For a small fee, families working with case managers from partnering agencies, can select furniture, linens, cookware and accessories to outfit their new homes. Families exchange Green Points for needed items on the showroom floor. The Green Chair experience encourages families to prioritize and make choices and empowers them to create their surroundings and rebuild their lives.
Our Chapter will have other opportunities to partner with this wonderful organization in the near future. Keep an eye open for your chance to be a part of giving back to our community!

Good Works Spring 2015
UNC-TVs Festival 2015 (at their RTP studio) was part of our chapter’s most recent involvement for our spring 2015 Good Works. Our volunteers answered phones and took pledge information from UNC-TV’s many supporters (while raising thousands of dollars). In the process we learning that our participation was a great way to meet new people, witness a live television production, get a behind-the-scene tour of the studio, support public television, while bringing publicity for our chapter! Our participation is an essential part of UNC-TV's continued success. Our chapter was represented by the following chapter members pictured (from left to right): Deane Tolman, Keri Johnson, Valerie Butler and Steve Butler.

Eastern N.C. Chapter of CPCU Good Works

On Saturday, December 13th our charter sent 9 volunteers to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Established in 1980, the Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that has provided food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties for 30 years. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through distribution centers in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines) and Wilmington.
Sadly, food insecurity remains a serious problem in central and eastern North Carolina. In these counties, more than 651,000 people struggle to access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy life.
Our tour of duty, this particular morning, involved the sorting and bagging of bulk white and sweet potatoes into manageable-size bags to be distributed to needy families. Our team was responsible for bringing a little more joy and happiness to families during this festive time of the year.
Keep an eye open for our chapter’s next Good Works project, scheduled for early March!

Good Works 2013 Project (Food Bank)

On Saturday, December 14th, the chapter hosted another Good Works project at the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina, located in Raleigh. When we arrived, we were tasked with helping to sort, label and inventory over 11,000 pounds of canned yams. A daunting task but yet one that was both festive yet rewarding. We left with the knowledge that we played a small part in helping many less fortunate families have a brighter holiday season!
Volunteers who assisted in this effort included (Front Row): Rhonda McFarland, Meghan Brown, Denise Murray, Deane Tolman (Back Row): Bill Murphree, Min Zhong, Jim Pratt, Paul Hoover, Tom Murray, David Braswell, Diane Richardson, Ann Bass
Special Thanks to Suzanne Schneider, AINS
Suzanne has been working behind the scenes as the administrative assistant for the chapter for just over 20 years. She has been a part of nearly every event the chapter has run during that time and is a big part of the chapter continuing to run smoothly during times of transition. We sincerely appreciate her hard work and dedication to our organization over the years. The chapter would not be the same without her.
GOOD WORKS PROGRAM - 12/14/2013
2013 Annual Good Works Holiday Project!

This year our Chapter will again partner with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina
Date: December 14, 2013 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon
IS THERE A NEED? Sadly, hunger remains a serious problem in central and Eastern North Carolina. Over 560,000 people in the Food Bank's 34-county service area struggle each day. Nearly 34 percent of the people served by the Food Bank’s network are children, and another 11 percent are elderly. Thirty-eight percent of the families served are the “working poor” – people who work hard and still have to choose between eating and other basic necessities, such as medicine and housing.
Why Volunteer? Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina’s mission. Dedicated and caring people who donate their time make it possible for the Food Bank of Central &Eastern North Carolina to provide much needed food to those at risk of hunger.
The Food Bank relies on more than 14,180 volunteer hours each month to accomplish its mission of alleviating hunger. Volunteers are the critical link between the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, its 800 partner agencies, and the people they serve on a daily basis. By volunteering, you make a tangible contribution to your community. For every hour worked by volunteers at the Food Bank, 288 pounds of food is distributed to our network of partner agencies who serve the 560,000 people at risk of hunger in our service area.
How to Volunteer: If you would like to help with this Chapter’s Good Works holiday project or simply have questions about volunteering for this date, please contact Deane Tolman @
Telephone @ (919) 791-2593 or
E-mail @ [email protected]
Further specifics for this event and directions to the Food Bank will be provided for all who register. The numbers of volunteer slots are limited so please respond ASAP!
